Shilajit Checklist: 6 Tests to see if your Shilajit is Authentic

Shilajit Checklist: 6 Tests to see if your Shilajit is Authentic

Use these six simple tests to tell if your Shilajit is legit. Shilajit is one of the most potent natural supplements around and there are many things that pure shilajit is good for. But only if you're getting legit Shilajit. With the popularity of the natural mineral resin skyrocketing over the last few years, there are so many brands that have popped up and it's important you know exactly what you're looking for when you're buying your Shilajit.

1. Supplier test

So the first test happens before you even buy your Shilajit! Ask the manufacturer where the Shilajit comes from and the method behind the processing of it. Shilajit typically comes from the Nepal region in the Himalayas, but a similar product known as Mumijo was also discovered in Eurasia in a mountainous region of Russia. And whilst the chemical structure of Mumijo is very similar to Shilajit, it is known to be less potent than pure Himalayan Shilajit.

It is also important to know what processing method your manufacturer uses as impure Shilajit can make you seriously ill if it has unsafe levels of heavy metals due to incomplete processing.  Some of our herbs have been harvested from the same mountains for generations.

Our Ultra Pure Organic Shilajit, for example, is sourced from the Himalayan mountains, and dried for 100 days to ensure the highest quality of product. So, if a supplier cannot give a good answer to those first two questions, that should be a massive red flag.

2. Filtration test

Shilajit rocks are formed of decomposed plant materials mixed with rocks that have been pressurised over hundreds of years. The aim of the filtration process is to separate the plant materials back out from the rocks. This is done by breaking up the rocks and mixing it with water.

The rock's dust sediment forms at the bottom of the mixture and this should be filtered out. If this is not done, the Shilajit can make you ill, be sure to ask your supplier about the filtration process. Our Ultra Pure Organic Shilajit is filtered 32 times.

3. Temperature Test

The third test happens once your Shilajit arrives. This is the temperature test. Shilajit straight from the fridge will have a viscous texture.

In warmer temperatures, this will be less viscous and will be easier to scoop from the jar.

Shilajit is purified in batches, as the rocks are sourced individually so this means the consistency can vary per batch. If you have any questions or queries, please contact us at info@magictreesuperfoods.co.uk

4. Smell Test

This next test is a really simple one. It's the smell test. Shilajit should have an almost pungent tar like petrol smell. It's not nice!... and that's how you want it to be.

5. Burn Test

The fifth is the burn test. First, take a piece of Shilajit and place it on the end of the knife and use a lighter or a candle to try and burn the Shilajit. Pure, authentic Shilajit won't burn or set alight. Ash or bubbling is normal due to heat pockets forming in water molecules.

6. Solubility Test

So if the Shilajit passes the burn test, the next thing to do is place it into a mug and add hot water for the solubility test. Stir the Shilajit into the water and after a couple of minutes, authentic Shilajit will dissolve fully. The liquid should also be a dark, reddish brown colour.
